Mini-Workshop

Engaging Patients, Families, and Interprofessional Team Members in Co-creating Training Initiatives

- CDT
Room: St. Nicholas B
  • Expanding Interprofessional Health and Social Care Teams and Collaborative Practice

Balancing standardization and individualization is critical to meeting the unique needs of both patients and trainees. This session introduces a dual philosophical perspective for developing training materials, blending behaviorist and constructivist ideals. Central to this approach is the involvement of patients, families, trainees, and interprofessional team members as co-creators in designing, delivering, and evaluating interventions. The session will illustrate a variety of methods for engaging diverse participants in the co-creation process used during clinical research projects including: (a) a video training series co-created by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and parents of children who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC); (b) a collaborative project to create personalized training for healthcare providers, and (c) an online module series to address the unique needs of individuals with developmental disabilities during healthcare encounters, co-created by family members, an SLP, behavior analysts, and trainees.

Learning Objectives

  • Assess how strategies for patient, family, trainee, and health team member engagement in co-creation can effectively be applied in their context.
  • Develop action steps for involving patients, families, trainees, and other health team members in co-creation.
  • Identify strategies for overcoming constraints related to co-creating with patients, families, trainees, and other health team members.
