Brian Park (he/him) is Associate Professor at the Oregon Health & Science University. His clinical practice is at the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Richmond Clinic, a community health center in Southeast Portland. Brian serves as the inaugural medical director of OHSU Health Equity, focusing on building academic-community partnerships rooted in power-sharing and community healing. Brian also serves as the founding director of the RELATE Lab, a team working to build a more loving, human-centered healthcare system. RELATE’s Relational Leadership Institute (RLI) supports healthcare professionals to complement traditional forms of leadership with emerging relationship-centered leadership models that fosters psychological safety, belonging, and interdependence. RLI has spread nationally to other health systems. RELATE's Health Equity And Leadership (HEAL) program integrates community organizing into health systems to foster community-powered policy change. Started in 2014, HEAL has passsed local Portland policy that raised an additional $67 million for affordable housing; launched a mutual aid program to address social isolation during the physical distancing mandate of the COVID-19 pandemic; and passed statewide policy that mandates medication labels be translated to non-English languages--the most inclusive bill of its kind in the U.S.

As service learning programs expand, it is critical to center these efforts around building trusting relationships with community partners. Our session will offer 3 examples of service learning programs centering psychological safety and relationships, with opportunities for participants to apply new insights/skills to their contexts maximizing collaborative teamwork and engagement.
