High-yield Scholarship from a Student Innovation Challenge
- Expanding Interprofessional Health and Social Care Teams and Collaborative Practice
The first team of dentistry, dental hygiene, physician assistant, nursing, and health informatic students attempted a collaborative approach to treat pediatric cancer patients to reduce risk of caries.
A second team of pharmacy students and medical residents conducted a needs assessment in a family medicine clinic to gauge contraceptive education. This assessment suggested that patients and clinicians alike were not fully educated on contraceptive prescribing. The team coordinated an educational workshop surrounding contraceptive devices, roles of prescribers, and law.
A third team of pharmacy, nursing, and occupational therapy students implemented a podcast that conducted over 12 interviews regarding social determinants of health. This project submitted for a second innovation grant to further this program by providing supporting materials to embed previously recorded podcasts into healthcare curricula.
All teams presented their projects nationally, and one student received a national award for her contributions.
Learning Objectives
- Recognize opportunities for sustainable student-lead clinical/educational programs
- Describe benefits of students developing programs within an interprofessional team
