- Collaborative Leadership and Shared Responsibility in Interprofessional Teams
This presentation narrates our institution’s decade-long journey with interprofessional education (IPE), evolving from introductory activities to an integrated graduation experience. Through a combination of didactic learning, simulation, and clinical practice, a pathway was built culminating in an unofficial Oath at graduation. This Oath serves as a symbolic transition, bridging IPE to the collaborative practice that our students will engage in as healthcare professionals.Rationale: Our aim is to inspire others to persist in their IPE efforts, despite the inevitable challenges along the way. Interprofessional education is not a final destination but the foundation for collaborative practice. By breaking down professional silos, IPE helps develop practitioners who are prepared to provide optimal patient care. This presentation will highlight how an Oath at graduation can mark the end of one chapter and seamlessly lead to the next—a career of collaborative, patient-centered practice.Impact: The audience will leave with renewed inspiration and practical ideas for continuing their own IPE journey. They will also understand the importance of fostering a sense of unity, duty, and collaboration among students, not only throughout their educational path but as they move into professional practice.Relationship to the conference theme: The theme "Converging Currents" reflects the critical importance of bridging interprofessional education with collaborative practice. At our institution, administering an Oath at graduation has provided a meaningful link between these two areas. This approach can serve as a model for other institutions, demonstrating how to connect IPE with the collaborative practices that ultimately define successful healthcare delivery.
