Building Resilience Through Interprofessional Relationships: A Mother-daughter Collaboration

- CDT
Room: St. Nicholas B
  • Humanities and Social Sciences in Collaborative Practice
Every mother and daughter has a special bond, but when they are both interprofessional healthcare educators, that relationship takes on a new dimension. In this personal account, a nurse practitioner mother and her clinical ethicist daughter will share how they collaborate across disciplinary and institutional boundaries to develop innovative curriculum, promote interprofessional competencies with their learners, and advance interprofessional scholarship. Perhaps most importantly, cultivating a healthy mother-daughter working relationship has led to increased moral resilience and well-being for both. At times, we gently encourage one another to consider a problem from a different perspective, or we provide a source of support and strength when challenges threaten to overwhelm.Rationale: While not everyone will have a trusted family member to serve in this role, we hope this story will inspire attendees to consider the importance of cultivating relationships with interprofessional colleagues. According to Mary Koloroutis and David Abelson in Advancing Relationship-Based Cultures (2017), “healthy relationships are formed when people consistently attune to one another, wonder with and about one another, follow the cues provided by one another, and hold one another with respect and dignity.”Impact: In an era of increasing healthcare system complexity, fostering relationships of trust and connection is crucial to strengthen teams and teamwork, promote resilience, and resist burnout. By highlighting the importance of relationships through the art of storytelling, this presentation will encourage attendees to tune in to their colleagues with curiosity and appreciation to build healthy teams, healthy systems, and healthy communities.Relationship to the conference theme: This presentation relates to the conference theme of Humanities and Social Science in Collaborative Practice by using the art of storytelling to highlight the importance of relationship-building as a strategy to promote resilience and well-being. Encouraging attendees to foster relationships of curiosity and appreciation with their colleagues can lead to enhanced resilience, well-being, and work-life balance.
