Mini-Workshop

Creating ‘systems Citizens’: Identifying Synergies Between Interprofessional Education and Health Systems Science

  • Expanding Interprofessional Health and Social Care Teams and Collaborative Practice
The increasing complexity of both patient needs and healthcare delivery systems calls for transformation of health and social care systems. Health Systems Science (HSS) is the study of how health care is delivered. Seen as a needed component of medical education, one of the 12 core domains of HSS is “teaming,” which recognizes the need for interprofessional teamwork. Interprofessional education (IPE) can deepen the HSS domain of teaming. Equally important, HSS can deepen IPE by advancing health systems knowledge across all healthcare team members; together, they can better improve care at both patient and systems levels. This workshop provides participants with knowledge about HSS and how to integrate its concepts into IPE to broaden all health professions learners’ knowledge of health systems science to become “systems citizens.”Session outline with active learning strategies: Introduction: 5 minutes

Content & Discussion: 15 minutes

What is HSS - and how it’s different from system thinking and team science.

Common challenges in the IPE & HSS fields.

Why and how HSS can support advancements in IPE.

Active learning (30 minutes total): Participants will practice integrating HSS concepts to innovate existing IPE curriculum. Participants will draw cards with IPE curricular scenarios that ask them to apply a specific HSS domain to an IPE activity. A worksheet will be provided to guide them through a process to integrate the two.

5 mins: individual work

15 mins: Share back as a table

10 mins: Share back as a large group, including sharing existing examples of HSS integration in IPE curricula.

Wrap up: 10 minutes

Presenters will summarize key points from the discussion.

Learning Objectives

  • Develop knowledge of how HSS concepts can inform IPE.
  • Advocate for the value-add of integrating HSS in IPE curriculum design.
  • Apply HSS to IPE curriculum design.
