Fueling Our Future Health: An Interprofessional Experience
Abstract ID: 1999944
Submission Type: Oral Presentation
Conference Theme: Innovative Approaches to Interprofessional Pedagogy and Education Science
Background/rationale
Today's healthcare learners are tomorrow's clinical professionals. Clinical practice is collaborative—there is a strong movement to have clinical education be collaborative as well. It is essential to provide our future health care practitioners with communication and collaboration skills they will need to flourish on a healthcare team and provide coordinated patient care. To improve the healthcare in our community, our academic program provides several collaborative educational sessions throughout the curricula. One such initiative has been to create an Annual IPE Day that is celebrated throughout our academic and professional footprint. Examples of recent topics include nutrition, well-being, and technology integration.
Implementation:
Interprofessional champions identified and secured expert speakers for a morning didactic session, which is followed by active learning for students in the afternoon. Student ambassadors from various health disciplines are assigned to a team facilitated by faculty and participate in a competition-style activity designed by the IPE champions.
Evaluation:
This year, evaluation included live feedback from chef judges and faculty preceptors. Judging included presentation, taste, nutritional value of a plated meal and nutrition plan presented. A post survey was distributed to all attendees.
Outcomes:
Approximately half of the survey respondents were students (51%). The majority of attendees (64%) strongly agreed that the morning presentations and panel discussions provided valuable insight on theme. The survey revealed an opportunity to enhance the level of communication for the afternoon competition. Most (97%) would recommend attendance at a future IPE day to their colleagues.
Significance:
This approach enhances individual competencies and contributes to a more cohesive healthcare system and community. IPE Day has strengthened our community partnerships, allowing us to expand our educational audience beyond the academic setting. By following our process, other institutions can create a collaborative educational environment that prepares healthcare learners for the demands of clinical practice.
Learning Objectives
1. Demonstrate an understanding of how to develop an IPE session that incorporates the needs of their
case-based patient population.
2. Apply strategies to create a practical application that utilizes the ideas covered in the plenary
discussions and accounts for the case-based scenario(s).

Summary paragraph for the program (50 words)
Participants will learn about the development of an Interprofessional Education Day to include both practicing clinicians and student learners. Discussion will focus on our most recent iteration focused on nutrition. We will cover the successes and the learning opportunities we have seen.
Learning Objectives
- Demonstrate an understanding of how to develop an IPE session that incorporates the needs of their case-based patient population.
- Apply strategies to create a practical application that utilizes the ideas covered in the plenary discussions and accounts for the case-based scenario(s).
- Translates the case-based scenario into a PowerPoint that demonstrates a clear understanding of the case-based patients’ social determinants of health.
